The plotter stops with an ink system error and will not print, often after a cartridge change or a long idle, with the panel flagging a specific ink position.
These are the failure paths we see most often on the Canon imagePROGRAF for a ink system error condition. Likelihood reflects field frequency; First Check is what you can do remotely before sharing logs.
| Cause | Likelihood | First Check |
|---|---|---|
| Air trapped in the sub-tank after a cartridge swap | High | Note which color faults and whether it followed a cartridge change |
| Purge or pump not completing the ink charge | Medium | Watch the charge cycle and whether it aborts or times out |
| Non-genuine or mis-seated cartridge not detected | Medium | Confirm the cartridge clicks in and is recognized on the panel |
| Maintenance cartridge full blocking operation | Low | Check the maintenance cartridge counter on the panel |
Work through these in order. Each step is something you can perform and report back on without opening the enclosure or swapping parts.
Read which ink station the error names. A single-position fault after a swap is almost always air or a seating issue at that slot.
Start the ink system charge / purge from the panel and watch it complete. If it aborts on one color, that sub-tank did not prime and we target it.
Remove and re-seat the flagged cartridge, confirm it clicks and is recognized, then re-run the charge. A mis-seated cartridge reads as a system fault.
Open the status monitor and confirm the maintenance cartridge is not at limit and the sub-tank levels look right after charging.
Print a status sheet after a clean charge. All colors present and stable means the air is gone; a repeat fault means the pump path needs review.
An imagePROGRAF ink system error is usually air or a seating fault at one slot, not a failed ink system. The flagged position and the charge-cycle behaviour are what we use to localize it. Cross-reference the broader collections: Ink / supply fault · Ink delivery system.

Rarely. We clear air and confirm seating remotely; only a pump that will not complete points to hardware, and we confirm that first.
That is your call, but a chip the panel will not recognize reads as a system error. We check detection before blaming the pump.
Swapping introduces air into the sub-tank. A proper charge purges it; if it does not, the slot did not prime and we walk through it.
Tell us the flagged position and the charge result. We clear air and confirm seating remotely so you avoid an unnecessary ink-system swap.
