Printed layers suddenly jump sideways by a fixed offset, repeating at the same height, so the model looks sliced into a staircase.
These are the failure paths we see most often on the Creality Ender-3 for a layer shift condition. Likelihood reflects field frequency; First Check is what you can do remotely before sharing logs.

Work through these in order. Each step is something you can perform and report back on without opening the enclosure or swapping parts.
With the printer off, deflect each belt at its midpoint. Both X and Y should feel similar and spring back. A slack belt skips teeth exactly when the shift appears.
Confirm the grub screw on each stepper pulley sits on the flat of the shaft. A pulley slipping on the shaft produces a consistent, repeatable shift.
Read the stepper driver current setting (Vref or UART value) and compare to the motor spec. Too low a current drops steps under acceleration; we give you the target range.
Slide each axis by hand with motors disabled. A tight wheel or a snagged cable adds load that triggers missed steps at speed — note where it catches.
Temporarily reduce acceleration in the slicer and reprint the failing section. If the shift disappears, the cause is mechanical margin, not a broken motor.
